Microelectronics is not only the driving force behind digital innovation and indispensable for industry, mobility, energy supply, and communication; it has also long since become the key currency for industrial value creation.
That is why we are particularly pleased to continue supporting the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) in the coming years with our expertise as the project management agency for microelectronics.
On behalf of the BMWE, we are committed to
- strengthening Germany as a semiconductor hub by expanding production capacity and implementing state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies,
- securing value creation by enabling corporate investments through government funding, and
- expanding European supply chains to reduce dependencies and ensure Germany’s strategic autonomy.
In our new role as project management agency, we draw on our extensive experience in microelectronics funding and contribute our technical, administrative, legal, and communications expertise.
As the project management agency for the BMWE, we have already supported the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) Microelectronics initiative, its successor program—the IPCEI Microelectronics and Communications Technologies initiative—as well as funding for projects under the European Chips Act (ECA). Since 2018, we have been working side by side with the BMWE to make Germany a strong hub for microelectronics, and together we have successfully launched and supported more than 40 major projects. With the current IPCEI Advanced Semiconductor Technologies initiative, we are now continuing on this path.
“Thanks to our many years of expertise, we understand the challenges involved in funding large-scale investment projects. That’s why we’ve developed digital tools that make our processes leaner, more efficient, and highly transparent. A major benefit for everyone involved!”
Paradiso Coskina, Project Manager
Making Europe’s Semiconductor Industry Competitive
To strengthen Germany’s and Europe’s position in strategically relevant parts of the semiconductor value chain, production capacities must be expanded, high-performance supplier networks established, and equipment, materials, and innovative manufacturing technologies further developed.
“For us, it is crucial to stay closely connected to the industry and identify developments early on. Through continuous monitoring and direct dialogue with industry stakeholders, we can see where specific needs arise and where new opportunities open up. We then incorporate this knowledge into the further development of our initiatives.”
Dr. Marita Wenzel, Project Manager
Our Contribution to a Strong Microelectronics Industry in GermanyThe global market for semiconductor investments, production sites, technological expertise, infrastructure, and—last but not least—skilled workers is highly competitive. All major industrialized nations support their semiconductor companies with large-scale “Chips Acts” and funding programs worth billions. Germany, too, has allocated approximately 15 billion euros in funding through its current programs and will invest an additional 3.8 billion euros in the planned IPCEI Advanced Semiconductor Technologies (AST) initiative. We therefore continue to support the BMWE in all phases of the funding process: from the development of new funding measures, the design of funding concepts and calls for proposals, through the selection, application, and implementation of projects, to project completion. Through systematic performance measurements and evaluations, we gain valuable insights that we directly incorporate into the further development of future funding measures.
