A primary example being biotechnology, one of the key forces driving innovation in healthcare. From new methods such as CRISPR-Cas gene editing to tailor-made therapies, biotechnological approaches are opening up many new possibilities for earlier detection of diseases, more targeted prevention and treatment, and more efficient healthcare overall.

Personalised Medicine for Effective Therapies

One particularly dynamic field is personalised medicine. Rather than relying on a “one-size-fits-all” approach, new technologies enable treatment that is tailored to the genetic and biological characteristics of each individual.

In practice, this means that a cancer drug is only administered to those patients for whom it is likely to be highly effective. This increases the chances of success of a therapy and reduces side effects.

A key technology in this context is the CRISPR-Cas gene editing tool. It can be used to make targeted changes to our DNA, our genetic material, similar to a precise correction function in a text. This opens up the possibility of treating genetic disorders directly at their source, including conditions such as ALS or Huntington’s disease, which are often caused by errors in the DNA.

The concept of “organ on a chip” takes a different approach. Tiny organ models are replicated on microchips to mimic the function of human organs as realistically as possible. In the future, these chips may allow new medicines to be tested with fewer animal experiments, whiles helping to predict the effectiveness of therapies. This accelerates development and increases safety for patients.

Health Management for The Optimal Use of Scarce Resources

In addition to developing medical solutions, health management is a key focus for our experts. When data coming from different sources, such as family doctors, hospitals, or even digital health applications—is meaningfully linked, it creates a comprehensive picture of the health status of an individual or a population group. Knowledge about the status quo is also crucial for preventing and combating pandemics. This gives policymakers the opportunity to make targeted use of scarce resources in the healthcare system.
