Whether microelectronics, artificial intelligence, or quantum computing – digital technologies are shaping our lives like never before. They are drivers of innovation, economic prosperity, and societal progress. Through our work, we support research and development to strengthen technological sovereignty and promote a responsible digital transformation.

Key technologies for a digital future

Digital technologies are the foundation of our modern world – from communication and industry to science and everyday life. Investment in microelectronics, high-performance computing, and new key digital technologies is essential if Germany and Europe are to remain competitive internationally.

Microelectronics form the basis: High-performance semiconductors are essential components of almost all digital devices and systems. Without them, there would be no smartphones or autonomous cars, no medical technology or modern robotics. Building domestic capabilities and strengthening technological sovereignty are therefore crucial to reducing dependencies on global supply chains.

Another key area is high-performance computing (HPC). Supercomputers enable the analysis of vast amounts of data – whether for climate research, drug development, or the optimisation of complex manufacturing processes.

In combination with artificial intelligence (AI), this opens up completely new possibilities for pattern recognition, prediction, and automation.

Confidence in digitalisation

But digitalisation requires trust. Cybersecurity and data ethics are therefore becoming increasingly important. Public acceptance of new technologies can only be strengthened if systems are secure and data are handled responsibly. Data must become more accessible and usable while ensuring high standards of protection and security.

In the field of AI and AI ethics, it is important to balance innovation and responsibility. Whether in medicine, transportation, or administration, AI can make processes more efficient and decisions more informed. At the same time, questions about transparency, fairness, and social impact must be answered. The responsible use of AI is therefore a key area of action.

Innovation that shapes the future

Human-machine interaction is also evolving rapidly. Autonomous systems and robotics are changing production, logistics, and everyday life. They can take on dangerous tasks, speed up processes, or enable new services. At the same time, they raise ethical and social questions: How do we shape the collaboration between humans and machines?

New technologies are also creating new forms of culture and entertainment. Today, the gaming sector is much more than just a leisure activity; it is a driver of technological innovations, particularly in areas such as graphics, simulation, and interaction. Many developments from the gaming sector are finding their way back into industry, education, and healthcare.

Future technologies such as quantum computing have the potential to fundamentally change our world once again. With their unprecedented computing capabilities, quantum computers can solve problems that remain beyond the reach of even today’s most powerful supercomputers, including challenges in materials research, optimisation and cryptography.

Digital technologies and microelectronics are therefore not just technical issues – they are key issues for the future. They will determine the competitiveness of our economy, the sovereignty of Europe, and the shaping of a digital society based on trust, openness, and innovation. Through our work, we help ensure that Germany and Europe remain at the forefront of these developments and that digital technologies are not only developed, but also deployed responsibly.
